Don't let your fear of flying hold you back this summer.

As summer approaches, many people are busy planning holidays, booking flights and counting down the days until they can relax on a beach somewhere sunny. Yet for others, the thought of stepping onto a plane fills them with dread.
In fact, every year around this time, we see an increase in people seeking help for a fear of flying. The good news? Phobias and irrational fears are highly treatable, and solution focused hypnotherapy offers a refreshingly different approach.
It's not really about the plane
In fact, with phobias, it's almost never about the phobia. Most people with a fear of flying know, logically, that air travel is incredibly safe. The problem isn't a lack of information. It's that the emotional part of the brain is overriding the logical part.
When we're stressed or anxious, our primitive brain, sometimes called the "fight, flight, freeze" response, becomes more active. Its job is to keep us alive by constantly scanning for danger. Unfortunately - as anyone who can only watch horror films from behind a cushion will testify, our brains can't tell the difference between a genuine threat and an imagined one. That's why someone can be sitting safely in an airport lounge while their heart races, their stomach churns and their mind starts imagining every possible disaster.
The problem with negative forecasting
One of the things the primitive brain loves to do is catastrophise - imagining all those 'what if' moments and worst-case scenarios and treating them as though they're likely to happen.
The more we rehearse these frightening mental movies, the stronger the neural pathways associated with fear become. Before long, just thinking about flying can trigger anxiety.
This is where solution focused hypnotherapy takes a different approach. Rather than endlessly discussing fears and analysing where they came from, we focus on helping the brain move out of survival mode and back into a calmer, more rational state.
Emptying your stress bucket
A useful way to understand this is through the idea of the "stress bucket".
Everyday pressures, poor sleep, work demands and worries gradually fill the bucket. When it becomes too full, the primitive brain takes over more often, making us more reactive, anxious and prone to irrational fears.
Solution focused hypnotherapy helps clients to empty their stress bucket. Slowly but surely over the weeks, through sessions that focus on positive thoughts, actions and interactions, combined with relaxing hypnosis, stress levels reduce, sleep often improves and the brain becomes less sensitive to perceived threats.
Getting your intellectual brain back online
As stress reduces, the prefrontal cortex - often called the intellectual brain - starts functioning more effectively. This is the part of the brain responsible for logical thinking, perspective, problem-solving and decision-making. It's what allows us to recognise that turbulence is uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and that a delayed flight is an inconvenience, not a catastrophe. When the intellectual brain is back in charge, people are far less likely to get swept away by catastrophic thoughts or irrational fears.
Looking forward to the holiday
Many clients are surprised by how quickly their relationship with flying begins to change. Instead of imagining everything that could go wrong, they find themselves focusing on what they're actually looking forward to: the destination, the memories they'll create and the experiences they'll enjoy.
This is really what solution focused hypnotherapy is all about - helping your brain spend less time searching for danger and more time looking towards the future you want. So if a fear of flying is threatening to ground your summer plans, it might be time to give your brain a chance to pick a different flight path.
